The most impressive aspect of Funny Story is that it succeeds in every area. Quality and efficiency seep out of every pore of this indie treat. From the acting, to the directing to the script. It is a big ask to craft an affecting, thought-provoking movie in 80 minutes, but the whole crew has managed to do it here with Funny Story.

What happens when an aging heartthrob accidentally sleeps with his daughter’s new girlfriend the day before officially meeting her? That’s the premise of “Funny Story,” a new comedy from Maker Studios co-founder Michael Gallagher. An exclusive new trailer shows that “Funny Story” could offer a fresh take on the love triangle rom-com, with an added queer twist.

The Mallorca event will open with Michael J. Gallagher’s Funny Story, which premiered at Utah’s Slamdance Film Festival in the United States in January 2018. Melissa Leo will receive the Icon award and Mads Mikkelsen is honored with the Vision award.

“The Thinning: New World Order” is directed by Michael Gallagher, who penned the script with Steve Greene. Gallagher, alongside his Cinemand partners Jana Winternitz and Michael Wormser, produced alongside eOne’s Greg Siegel.

Three-year-old Cinemand has launched Cinemand Films with plans to finance original narrative features from filmmakers in both the theatrical and digital space. Cinemand Films’ first project “Funny Story” wrapped production last week. The film stars Emily Bett Rickards (“Brooklyn”), Matthew Glave (“Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce”), and Jana Winternitz (“The Thinning”) and is set to have its world premiere at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival.

Slamdance’s Beyond category — for emerging filmmakers working beyond their first features — was announced yesterday along with its two shorts competitions, with five world premieres gracing the first category. The 2018 Slamdance Film Festival runs January 19-25 in Park City, Utah. 

The seventh annual Streamy Awards nominations were announced Tuesday morning, Legendary Digital's 'The Thinning' picked up three total nominations: Best Feature, Best Actor, And Best Action or Sci-Fi. 'The Thinning' was produced by Michael Gallagher, Jana Winternitz & Michael Wormser through their Cinemand label.

Freeform has gone live with Party Girl, a 10-episode original shortform series from New Form and Maker Studios now available on its website and Hulu. The comedy was co-created by YouTube personality Lisa Schwartz and The Goldbergs writer Lacey Friedman. Schwartz also stars.

One month after hitting iTunes, “Internet Famous” — a feature-length mockumentary about digital fame starring YouTube comedian Shane Dawson — will be available worldwide on Netflix starting Thursday, July 21. “Internet Famous” was produced by Lakeshore Entertainment’s Off The Dock and Maker Studios along with content studio Cinemand and Entertainment 360.

In the case of James Sweeney’s Normal Doors—a proof of concept/pitch for his feature film, Straight Up, produced for Fox Digital Studios—the answer is a resounding yes.
